Chiropractic Care vs. Painkillers: What’s the Difference?

When pain strikes, the easiest thing to do is reach for a painkiller. It’s quick, it’s familiar, and it works — at least for a while. But if you find yourself relying on medication more and more, it might be time to ask a different question: what’s actually causing the pain? This is where chiropractic care takes a fundamentally different approach.

Painkillers: Managing Symptoms

Painkillers — whether over-the-counter like ibuprofen or prescribed medication— work by blocking pain signals or reducing inflammation. They’re useful in the short term, particularly after an acute injury or flare-up. But they don’t fix the underlying problem. If your back pain is caused by a restricted joint, a muscle imbalance, or poor spinal alignment, taking a painkiller won’t change any of that. The pain will return once the medication wears off, often in a cycle that can go on for months or even years.

Chiropractic Care: Addressing the Root Cause

Chiropractic care is built on a different philosophy. Rather than suppressing symptoms, the goal is to identify and treat the mechanical cause of your pain. This might be:

 Spinal misalignment causing nerve irritation

] Restricted joint movement leading to compensatory tension elsewhere

 Muscle imbalances that put excess strain on certain areas

 Postural habits that have gradually caused structural changes

By addressing these underlying issues through targeted chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work, and rehabilitative exercises, the aim is to reduce pain naturally— and keep it from coming back.

What the Research Says

A growing body of evidence supports chiropractic care for musculoskeletal conditions. Studies have shown it to be effective for lower back pain, neck pain ,and headaches — often with results comparable to or better than medication, and without the side effects

Not Either/Or

It’s worth saying: chiropractic care and conventional medicine aren’t at odds. Many of our members at JS Chiropractic use both, particularly in the early stages of recovery. The difference is that chiropractic care works towards a point where you no longer need to manage pain at all — because the cause has been resolved.
